Increasing employment opportunities await Filipino caregiver as the demand for their services continues to rise abroad. Citing the Labor Market Intelligence Report (LMIR), the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in the Philippines said that numerous advertisements in major dailies indicate the growing demand for Filipino caregiver, especially in the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. The LMIR was released by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), a DOLE agency.

The LMIR said the United States, Canada, and developed European countries remain the traditional markets of a Filipino caregiver who are preferred for their human touch, English-speaking capacities, relational values, and other qualities that matter much in this profession. It noted that caregiving activity is “especially huge” in the US, citing a 1997 study that Americans had spent US$115 billion for caregiving services. In the United Kingdom, caregivers are called nursery nurses who have received special training and have passed certification exams given by the UK’s National Nursery Examination Board. Also specified in the LMIR were the job orders for Filipino caregiver in Israel and Bahrain, which were coursed through placement and recruitment agencies licensed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, as well as the increasing demand for Filipino caregiver in Saudi Arabia and Spain.

According to the LMIR, the global demand for Filipino caregiver has given rise to many schools and training centers offering caregiving courses across the country. Labor Undersecretary Manny Imson stressed, however, that the TESDA vigilantly monitors the field to ensure that quality standards are in place and to maintain the Filipino caregiver’ reputation as a special breed of health workers.
